About the Hattie Larlham Creative Arts program
Since the inception of the program in 2007, the Hattie Larlham Creative Arts has grown from six to more than 85 artists working in paint, photography, pottery and poetry. Each artist has a weekly one-on-one session with a tracker, also a professional artist, who helps program participants create by eliciting responses to a series of detailed questions. The process results in carefully crafted, one-of-a-kind pieces that provide a glimpse into the world of artists who often cannot speak for themselves. Works from the Hattie Larlham Creative Arts program have been displayed throughout the U.S. Learn more.

About Victoria and Zoe Yin
Victoria Yin, age 14, is an artist, poet and songwriter widely recognized as a child prodigy. Victoria’s paintings articulate profound mature subjects far beyond her years. By age 5, she had already received numerous accolades and awards for her work. Her surrealistic style is considered on the level of Max Ernst, Joan Miro, and Salvador Dali. Victoria incorporates these surrealistic elements into a futuristic style which is unique in the art world.

Zoe Yin, age 11, is an artist and writer. Like her older sister, Zoe is a child prodigy with remarkable artistic talents. At age 8, she was the youngest artist ever exhibited at the International Art Expo. Zoe’s broad brushstrokes and colorful combinations create a dreamy interpretation of the human form.

The Yin sisters, who both began drawing at the age of one, have exhibited across the country and been featured in several publications, including Art Business News. Their paintings, which are widely collected in the U.S., typically command sales in the five figures.

On May 14, 2012, Hattie Larlham will officially open its third Hattie’s Doggie Day Care & Boarding at 18200 Brookpark Road, Suite A, in Cleveland, Ohio. Hattie’s Doggie Day Care & Boarding is an award-winning Hattie Larlham social enterprise that provides vocational training and meaningful employment to people with developmental disabilities. The new Cleveland location will create 40 jobs for people with developmental disabilities as well as positions for a manager, full-time and part time job coaches and a groomer. The cage-free facility will offer day care, overnight boarding and grooming services for dogs.

“At Hattie Larlham, creating opportunities for people with developmental disabilities to gain valuable work experience and be a part of their communities is an integral part of our mission. Programs like Hattie’s Doggie Day Care & Boarding are a win-win situation for people with developmental disabilities with a passion for working with animals to build their skill set and gain confidence while providing a safe, loving and attentive environment for the dogs in their care,” said Dennis Allen, chief executive officer for Hattie Larlham. “We are very thankful for the support of the Cuyahoga County Board of Developmental Disabilities in helping us bring this unique program to Cleveland. We look forward to serving this new community.”

The new location of Hattie’s Doggie Day Care & Boarding is just two miles from Cleveland Hopkins International Airport and within walking distance of the Brookpark Road Rapid Transit Authority (RTA) station, making it convenient for both travelers and commuters. The 5,300-square-foot facility featuring 26 individual dog rooms, two 2,000-square-foot outdoor play areas and four indoor activity areas, will be the largest Hattie’s Doggie Day Care & Boarding to date. Like the Hattie’s Doggie Day Care & Boarding facilities in Green and Twinsburg, the focus in Cleveland will also be on providing as much play and socialization time for dogs as possible.

Hattie’s Doggie Day Care & Boarding in Cleveland was made possible through the support and financial commitment of the Cuyahoga County Board of Developmental Disabilities.

“We are pleased to partner with Hattie Larlham on this venture. We have successfully worked with them on other enterprises and are confident that this one too will be a success. Both our organizations share the goal of providing meaningful opportunities for people with developmental disabilities to live, learn, work and play in the community,” said Dr. Terrence M. Ryan, Ph.D., superintendent of the Cuyahoga County Board of Developmental Disabilities.

Other sources of support include The Cleveland Foundation, the Eva L. and Joseph M. Bruening Foundation, Deaconess Community Foundation, Murphy Family Foundation and the Harry K. Fox and Emma R. Fox Charitable Foundation.

The business, which has been family owned for 32 years, has been a longtime supporter of Hattie Larlham. In September and December 2011, Haylett’s sold doves based on Hattie Larlham’s logo to raise money for organization. Shawn and Lisa also organized a display of works from the Hattie Larlham Creative Arts program at the store, helping to promote and even sell the pieces. They shared their enthusiasm for Hattie Larlham with BP corporate and earned a promised donation from them. Haylett’s employees rallied to support Hattie Larlham, with one even providing a matching donation. The $4,450 check reflects a culmination of all these efforts.

“Supporting worthy causes in the community, like Hattie Larlham, means a lot to us. Our employees and customers were truly inspired by the Hattie Larlham Creative Arts pieces that we showed in the store. We look forward to continuing our work with Hattie Larlham,” said Shawn Haylett, owner and manager of Haylett’s BP.

Hattie’s Café & Gifts, a Hattie Larlham social enterprise that employs people with developmental disabilities, and the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad have partnered to bring healthy options to the railroad’s concession car. Hattie’s Café & Gifts’ salads, sandwiches, wraps and preservative-free baked goods are now available to Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad passengers. The food is prepared at the Hattie’s Café & Gifts in Hudson, Ohio.

“At Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad, we take great pride in being a part of the Northeast Ohio community and partnering with other local organizations. In working with Hattie’s Café & Gifts, the benefit is twofold – we are not only getting a great product, but also helping to better the lives of people with developmental disabilities. We believe the new offerings from Hattie’s Café & Gifts will enhance the passenger experience by offering them locally sourced, fresh and affordable food to enjoy while traveling. The healthier menu items are also in line with the health and wellness initiatives recently announced by the Cuyahoga Valley National Park through the National Park Service Healthy Parks Healthy People U.S. Strategic Action Plan,” said Doug Moore, project coordinator at Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad.

Many of the concession items prepared by Hattie’s Café & Gifts will feature certified organic produce grown at Hattie’s Garden at Crown Point Ecology Center in Bath, Ohio. Throughout the year, Hattie’s Garden, another Hattie Larlham social enterprise, will supply Hattie’s Café & Gifts with salad greens, herbs and a range of seasonal vegetables.
“Hattie’s Café & Gifts has been a staple in Northeast Ohio since 2006. Working with a highly-regarded partner like the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad will help us reach a whole new audience that we hope will enjoy our food and also connect with our goal of providing vocational training and meaningful employment to people with developmental disabilities,” said Dotty Grexa, vice president of vocational and social enterprises at Hattie Larlham.

Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad is a not-for-profit, 501(c)(3) volunteer supported organization operating in partnership with Cuyahoga Valley National Park and is dedicated to the preservation of passenger rail transportation in Cuyahoga Valley and along the historic Ohio & Erie Canalway. In 2012, CVSR is celebrating its 40th year of providing excursion rail service in Northeast Ohio. For more information, visit www.CVSR.com.

It’s the perfect way to enjoy the outdoors. Join us on Sunday, June 10, for the second annual Hustle for Hattie. This year, the event will feature a 5-mile-run and a 30-minute walking challenge that will take place concurrently. Runners start at the end of the track at the football stadium and follow a path through the neighborhoods surrounding Green High School. The walking challenge will take place at the track.

The cost for the run is $20 if you pre-register and $25 the day of the race. The walking challenge will cost $10. All proceeds will benefit Hattie Larlham, a nonprofit that provides medical, residential, educational, vocational and recreational services to more than 1,500 people with developmental disabilities.
